Power Plates are the general term for vibration fitness machines and they have revolutionised the training regimes of gym-goers everywhere. To the first-time user, the experience can feel a little odd - the gym-goer stands on the plates and carries out a series of basic exercises while the machine vibrates. The exercises can be very basic - lunges, squats, crunches and bench presses etc - but every minute on the power plate is said to equate to ten minutes of traditional working out.
The machine works by creating instability in the body - with every vibration the body is made to reflex to maintain its stability, many times a second. Each contraction also forces the muscles to work in a multitude of different dimensions as the plates move in three planes, in the way that the human body's designed.
The results are fast fitness improvements - increased strength, power and endurance. Power plates also allow muscles to be 'loaded' for ultimate conditioning, without risking injuries and high body stress. The machines do not boost cardiovascular fitness, but they significantly improve muscle toning and strength and are a fantastically efficient way of strength training for results. Another benefit for female users is that they improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, so are also effective for reducing cellulite!
There are various different models to suit all budgets - everything from basic £350 models to full-spec and gym-quality £8,000 ones. The original Power Plate company does the widest range of models, but increasingly other suppliers are producing more budget-friendly models as the technology becomes more widespread.
