Advice Please!

I joined my gym back in March last year with the aim of getting myself back into shape after years of neglecting my physical health. Initially I started off well and was going 3 or 4 times a week until my enthusiasm waned and extra work away from home meant I could not access my gym as much as I would have liked to.
In between times I kept on running 2 or 3 times a week, 15 minutes here, 20 minutes there.
Very soon after starting my regime I noticed that my left knee had become slightly sore. I thought this was normal and that given time my body would adjust and it wouldn't be a problem. When it didn't go away after a couple of months I went to see my doctor who just suggested it was probably a minor cartilage problem and nothing too worry about. She recommended gentle stretching exercises so I tried this combined with a bit of yoga hoping it would it would have the desired effect. I t didn't and the soreness of the knee got no better.
I have just recently stepped up my activity at the gym spending a good 40 minutes the last three days working out on the treadmill and the bike. Result, I am incredibly sore and stiff and the knee is worse than ever. I guess I have overdone it but once I get into a workout I really start to enjoy it and keep thinking of how many extra calories I will bun if I prolong my session by 5 or 10 minutes each time.
I have recently put on a lot of weight and now am about 18 stone 6lbs. I am 6 feet tall, nearly 46 years of age. I don't look that heavy but no doubt about it I am clinically obese and I hate it.
I am now really worried that I may have done some serious damage to my knee and I am finding it incredibly difficult to bend (something which is required in my line of work) . Even walking is difficult and sometimes I have a noticeable limp and can not move with the same freedom as before. I am going to see my GP next week but they don't even give you a proper examination.
In the meantime, I don't know whether I should resume my activities at the gym or not.
I worry that I may have arthritis or that i have seriously damaged my joints by putting too much pressure on them too quickly.
Sorry for the long post, any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone!

I'm doing a survey for my BA degree and I need 120 UK residents to complete my survey. No idea how I'm gonna get such a big number of valid responses, therefore forwarding the link to your friends, friends of friends and relatives will be highly appreciated!
I know, at this time of the year everyone is asking to fill out their surveys, but unis don't really give us a choice =) If this was up to me I wouldn't bother you, but it's not, so your help would be appreciated big time =)

It won't take long, I tried to keep it short.

Rest Periods?

Hey, Ive recently started weight training, im in my 2nd week and im slowly getting used to it.

Something that I dont quite understand is rest periods, ive seen some people advising 3 days a week of training,MWF and having TTSS to rest, however I have alot of time and ive been going 5 times a week.

I have split my workout into specific areas, arms and chest, back and abs, shoulders and legs, doing only only 2 areas a session, so I have 2 days rest between the same workout.

Is this what is meant by a rest period? Is it resting specific muscles or resting completely from any work out?

Just one other thing, how long should I rest between sets? Ive been doing 30 seconds but im really struggling with fatigue on a weight that I can really easily lift.

Thanks, Liam.

Trouble Eating! Trying To Add Muscle

Hi guys and girls,

I recently joined my local gym with a goal to add alot of muscle, I dont have any problems with the training but I cant get my head around how much food I need to eat to see muscle gains.

Im a really bad eater, usually skip breakfeast, have a small lunch and eat my dinner really late on, I probably eat close to 2000 -2500 calories a day.

Is there anyway I can keep my current diet but use, shakes, bars etc before and after my workout and would I see any results, Ive read some articles suggesting 5-6 meals which I simply dont have organisational skills to do so.

If its any use im roughly 6'3" and weigh 14 stone.

Cheers, Liam.

Desperate For Some Help Please!

Hi Everyone,

My name is Stéphanie,

I am a student in my final year of Fashion Technology at Heriot Watt University School of Textiles.
I have developed a survey to benefit my dissertation.
My subject is an Investigation of the male "Athletic" body type in relation to the shirt fit.
There seems to be an issue around sizing and styles of shirts available in the High Street/shirt specialist to cater for more muscular/naturally broad shouldered bodies.

The survey is for male only, takes around 10 minutes and I would greatly appreciate if any would be willing to take part by answering few simple questions.

Losing The Last 5Kg At The Gym

Hi all..

So I used to go to the gym and after around a 5 years break I started going after letting myself get to a shameful 91KG, so now its 7-8 months later and I am roughly 76KG I cant seem to get rid of the last 5KG.. I stand up and I feel good but then I sit down and I feel like I have a Homer simpson gut..

I started off by going twice a day and using both treadmill and Cross trainer, I was losing roughly 400 calories x 2 when I was going twice a day and doing so for months.. the weight dropped off quickly and I eat around 1500/2000 calories a day, not caring what I eat but all in moderation! at the start I was avoiding all fatty foods like chips or pizza but now I am eating anything.

I then decided I wanted to swim so I was doing a lot of swimming for 1 hour at a time swimming up and down the pool (front stroke) as many times as I could and a trainer at the gym told me he would say I was losing roughly 600-700 calories by doing so. so then I was going twice a day after the few months but instead of using the gym both times I would use the swimming pool the second time and also not to get bored of going to the gym. this was 7 days a week and saturday I would do nothing but weights and then sunday swimming.

As time went on I started not being able to keep up with all of that exercise and from 7 days a week I started going 5 and after the xmas period I started only going 4..

Now at the gym I rotate between treadmill and cross trainer I do 200 calories and usually that lasts for 20 minutes I set the cross trainer to level 12 and the treadmill to level 10 KMPH its set to. I then do two different weights exercises 10x4 and two stomach exercises, one of which is on the ball doing push ups or is it sit ups that its called? lol and then I do two different weight machines but I really dont know the names of it but I dont think that will make a difference for losing body fat will it? I can find out though.

But I dont know why my body fat is not going..? is it because I am doing much less at the gym now? at the first month I did not want to do weights and I was doing nothing but cardio but now my goal is to work on my chest area my bicep and lose my homer Simpson gut (that last 5KG)

I wish I could afford a trainer and hopefully I will get a few lessons with my next pay from the DW cambridge trainers but if any one has some tips for losing the body ft I would appreciate it..

also I heard some different things about weights that confuse me.. I am told from an american trainer that your muscles get used to the weight lifting so dont do it too much.. fair enough hes huge and I do less now after he said that.. but dont people take steroids (sorry if that topic is not allowed here) so they can do MORE reps and constant weights? I dont get it?

not that I would ever consider taking that crap and I refuse to even drink that protein drunk that every one seems to drink at my gym

thanks again.

Uneven Chest Muscles

I don't really exercise, never properly have. I've played the guitar for 6 years and I always play sat down, leaning on the guitar.

This has built up a pretty large peck on my right side from all the strumming with nothing on the left side.

I was wondering if anyone knew the best way I could even them out. I've got a set of dumb bells that go up to 4.5kg and something I can use as a bench.

My idea is to get some protein powder stuff (while it's half price) and do as many chest strengthening exercises after taking it but I don't know a thing about fitness really.

Cheers if anyone can help!

Recovery Drink / Supplements

Hi,

I am looking for a supplement to aid in recovery after exercise. I play badminton 2/3 times a week, rugby twice a week and go to the gym when I can. I don't want to bulk up as being too big will interfere with movement when I play badminton but I also don't want to lose weight either as I play rugby. After exercise I have sore knees and muscle fatigue is a problem.

What can you recommend? I was looking at recovermax but that seems to be for extreme exercise like triathletes etc plus it is very expensive. I have just bought powerbar recovery and have read on the forums that glutamine and glucosamine are good supplements to take.

Thanks in advance
